There are different assistance programs for individual citizens versus public groups like government agencies and private nonprofit organizations. Find the help you need to support your disaster recovery.

Assistance

"Help After a Disaster" brochures are available in 27 languages and contain information about disaster assistance provided by FEMA, which consumers can apply for whether they have insurance or not.

The Disaster Assistance Improvement Program’s (DAIP) mission is to provide disaster survivors with information, support, services, and a means to access and apply for disaster assistance through joint data-sharing efforts between federal, tribal, state, local, and private sector partners.

Individual Assistance

Governor Kathy Hochul and the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced the openings of several Disaster Recovery Centers that will provide information, assistance and help for New Yorkers who were impacted by the storms and flooding caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

Bronx, Queens, Kings, Richmond, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, Westchester, and Dutchess counties were designated for individual assistance by FEMA. ***

The following Disaster Recovery Centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until further notice:

"Help After a Disaster: FEMA Individual Assistance Can Help You Recover" pamphlet.

***$2 million in emergency funding will be made available to eligible homeowners in five downstate counties who could not access FEMA Individual Assistance funding. Those counties are New York, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan and Ulster.

Individuals and Households Program

FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program (IHP) provides financial and direct services to eligible individuals and households affected by a disaster, who have uninsured or under-insured necessary expenses and serious needs. IHP assistance is not a substitute for insurance and cannot compensate for all losses caused by a disaster. The assistance is intended to meet your basic needs and supplement disaster recovery efforts. These may include temporary housing, temporary housing units, repair or replace of owner occupied homes, other uninsured or under insured disaster-caused expenses and serious needs, hazard mitigation assistance.
